I design and fabricate architectural ironwork,
furniture, and fireware.
Strongly influenced by the contemporary
sculpture movement in Italy, I was the first American artist/metalsmith
to employ industrial power hammers to achieve the bold textures
and powerful forms for which my style is known. As a metalsmith
specializing in forgings, I take a milled bar or plate of
metal, and through the hot process of forging, transform this
lifeless material into an elegant textured form. Unlike the
‘additive’ method of the welder or the ‘reductive’
method of the carver, my approach is manipulative which offers
the advantages of stronger structural integrity and an emphasis
on the organic, rather than machined qualities of metal. My
process of forging allows me a much wider visual vocabulary
that can be seen in the range of my portfolio. Fully bonded
and insured, I work primarily with steel, bronze, and copper.
