As an arts craftsman, tile has been my medium
of choice for 25 years. I attended college on a ceramics
scholarship and have been collecting and making hand built
tile ever since. I work with a customer for weeks to seek
out their desires in color and subject matter. Then begins
the process of pressing molds and finding ways to create
the shapes and colors they want.
Tile is very different than
most art forms. You have to stay close to clay, pressing
and cutting it, grooming and drying it very carefully.
Once the tiles are bisqued (the first firing) I then begin
the
task of arranging the many pieces, glazing each to match
perfectly with the design. Each piece is then measured
and trimmed to the contours of the framework, whether for
a piece
of furniture, a fireplace, kitchen backsplash or tub and
shower surround. The tiles are then glaze fired and ready
for final assembly and installation.
