Working with stone has been a passion I have
had for many years, a passion so deep that I have made it
my life's work. I have been a self-employed stone mason in
Woodstock, Vermont for several y ears and work with architects,
engineers and home owners on projects as simple as fixing
loose stones on steps, to jobs as complex as building large
retaining walls and stone fireplaces. During the course of
the past few years I have been combining the practical installation
of stone with a purely aesthetic approach and turning it
into sculpture.
My outdoor site specific sculpture is inspired
by the Neolithic structures of Europe, using large slabs
of granite as the structural element or frame and inlay stone
between, sometimes with an inlay of copper, to create the
effect that the stone is moving or bending. What I hope to
accomplish with my work is to create sense of place, a place
to read, meditate or just be. I feel my work is functional
as well; the sculpture is the focal point, the bench gives
people a place to sit and I often include landscaping in
my designs to enhance the overall effect. I feel my sculptures
have a nice balance between masculine and feminine energy,
the large erect pieces of granite balancing the softer foluptuous
stone curves between them.
My wall sculptures are inspired by my larger
outdoor sculptures, but are smaller and hang on a wall. They
are an extension of the full sized pieces with an inlay of copper,
mica, schist, granite and sometimes birch. I feel the perfect
environment would be a reception area in a professional office,
a restaurant or a room in a home. |
