I design, handpaint and fire tiles. I use Duncan
translucent underglaze paints which fire at 04 in 7 1/2 hours
and glaze as they fire. They take 14 1/2 hours to cool down
to 130 degrees or less, to open the kiln. I have a Skutt
automatic computer kiln. I prefer glazed tiles to work on.
The process is very time consuming as the backgrounds have
to be painted, let dry and the images taken off with round
toothpicks and Q-tips and repainted. The paint cannot be
painted over and is fragile until fired when it becomes one
with the tile.
I have three years of commercial art training,
and have worked in
most mediums. I have also won two logo contests. We have
been in business over 7 years, doing shows and custom work.
The tiles can be used for hot plates or for art work as my
h usband makes the frames. They also make beautiful back
splashes and will be original, one of a kind art.
